Resource regions non–resident population projections

These reports provide annual projections of the non‑resident (fly‑in/fly‑out and drive‑in/drive‑out (FIFO/DIDO)) populations for the Bowen and Galilee Basins, Surat Basin and Gladstone region out to a seven year horizon. The projections are based on workforce and accommodation data collected from industry sources by Queensland Government Statistician’s Office.

The projections take into account the FIFO/DIDO construction, production and maintenance workforces of all existing resource operations and future resource projects, as well as assumptions about project timing. Up to four projection series are provided for local government areas within each region, derived according to the status of projects in the development pipeline.

Projections data are also available for download in Excel format.

Non–resident population reports for these regions are also available.

The resource communities research program outputs contain information about FIFO/DIDO workers by local government areas (LGA) in each of the resource regions. If you are looking for detailed statistics about usual residents of these regions, data by LGA can be found in the Queensland Regional Database, while customised data for statistical areas level 2 (SA2) can be found in the Resource Regions System. Please note that resource regions defined by SA2 will differ from those defined by LGA boundaries.
