SEIFA Index of Advantage/Disadvantage, Census 2016 (table)

Published
Last reviewed

Queensland Government Statistician's Office has developed some Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) tables for statistical area level 1 (SA1), SA2 and local government area (LGA) which provide a breakdown of population within each quantile. Quantiles can be calculated a number of ways. Two common methods are "weighted" and "equal counts". The weighted method divides the data into even groups (quantiles), where each group has the same population (available for download based on rankings within Queensland, below). The equal count method divides the data into even groups where each group has the same number of regions. Equal count deciles can be downloaded from the ABS website. The SEIFA indexes are also available free of charge on the ABS website. The indexes based on 2016 census data are available for Australia and for all states and territories. For a more detailed explanation of SEIFA, see the ABS SEIFA 2016 technical paper (PDF, 400 kB).

Where a region's population is relatively large compared to the average population for specific region types, (e.g. Brisbane (C) LGA), quintiles may not contain equal populations.
