Queensland Government Statistician's Office (QGSO) engages in a range of research collaborations with local universities and research institutions, and in conjunction with other Queensland Government agencies. We manage research projects and coordinate input from participating Queensland Government agencies, and provide advice and expertise on technical questions and research-related issues.
The research projects cover socio-economic topics, with the ultimate aim to improve the evidence base for informed policy decision making and service delivery for Queensland Government.
QGSO is uniquely placed to facilitate access to Queensland Government data for approved research under the provisions of the Statistical Returns Act 1896. Services we provide include:
- negotiation with Queensland Government data custodians and researchers regarding data requirements, availability and suitability
- data linkage and the production of integrated datasets for Queensland Government supported research
- data management including secure data storage, access, retention and return
- development of contracts, agreements and deed polls governing these activities.
To enhance our data integration capability QGSO applied for accreditation with the Australian Government as an Integrating Authority under the Commonwealth data integration arrangements.
This accreditation, attained in October 2018, means that QGSO has the requisite skills, processes, infrastructure and culture required to undertake data integration projects involving Commonwealth data for statistical and research purposes. A summary of the QGSO application, audited by an independent external reviewer, is available on the Australian Government Open Data Tool Kit.
Together with QGSO’s legislative framework (particularly the Statistical Returns Act 1896), Integrating Authority accreditation means QGSO can apply to undertake data integration to support a range of high priority statistical, research and evaluation activities.
Further information about Integrating Authorities can be found at the Open Data Toolkit.
