This brief presents final estimates of the Australian and Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population as released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in the product Estimates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, June 2021. These replace preliminary estimates released on 21 September 2022.
These final population estimates are based on the 2021 Census and cannot be used with the 2016–based estimates and projection series 2006–2031 (Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2006–2031). However, compatible historical and projected estimates for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, will be released later in 2024.

This brief presents estimates and projections of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Queensland for the period 30 June 2006 to 30 June 2031 as released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in Estimates and projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2006 to 2031 (ABS 3238.0) (Incorporates revisions by the ABS to the original data release for the projection years 2017 to 2031 on 22 July 2021). Estimates for 30 June 2001 to 30 June 2005 are also included as an illustrative series and should be used with caution.
The size, structure and components of the estimated and projected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population presented in this brief supersede those previously published by the ABS for the period 2001 to 2026.

Population estimates by Indigenous status (table)
The Queensland Government Statistician's Office (QGSO) has developed detailed population estimates by Indigenous status. These estimates are available by:
- Indigenous status (Indigenous and non-Indigenous)
- Queensland statistical areas level 2 (SA2) based on the 2011 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS), and local government area (LGA) based on the 2015 ASGS
- age (single year under 20, five–year age groups from 20 to 64 years, and 65 years and over) and sex
- years 2001 to 2015 (for LGAs) and 2006 to 2015 (for SA2s).
