SA1 correspondence file (ASGS 2016)(rebased)

The smallest geographic level for which the estimated resident population (ERP) is officially prepared and validated is the statistical area level 2 (SA2). ERP by SA1 is then prepared by breaking down the SA2 ERP based on SA1–level census counts (for census year ERP) and other indicators (for non-census years). ERP at the SA1 level must be used with caution, with an understanding that they are not precise, and that they are essentially prepared to be built up to other levels. No validation of these SA1-level estimates is undertaken and several cautionary notes about the reliability of these estimates are included in the explanatory notes. ERP at the SA1 level are provided here to enable flexibility to be built up to broader regions.

SA1 has been designed as the smallest geographical unit for the release of census data. In the correspondence file below, SA1s have been assigned to various geographic areas as defined under the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS), 2016 edition. These include:

  • Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1)
  • Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2)
  • Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3)
  • Statistical Area Level 4 (SA4)
  • Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA)
  • State Electoral Division (SED)
  • Commonwealth Electoral Division (CED)
  • Tourism Region (TR)
  • Indigenous Location (ILOC)
  • Indigenous Area (IARE)
  • Indigenous Region (IREG)
  • Urban Centre and Locality (UCL)
  • Section of State Ranges (SOSR)
  • Section of State (SOS)
  • Significant Urban Area (SUA)
  • Remoteness Area (RA)

This correspondence file also contains the following statistics at SA1 level:

  • Land mass area (Albers) in km²
  • Land mass area (Spherical) in km²
  • Count of private dwellings (Census 2016)
  • Usual resident population (Census 2016)
  • Estimated resident population 2011 to 2021

This file has been updated to include updated estimated resident population for 2017 to 2021 (preliminary rebased estimates) that incorporate data from the 2021 Census.
