The Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) was a hierarchical geographical classification, defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), which was used in the collection and dissemination of official statistics. The ASGC provided a common framework of statistical geography and thereby enabled the production of statistics which were comparable and could be spatially integrated.
The 2011 edition of the ASGC was the last. From 1 July 2011, ASGC has been replaced by the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). As a whole, the ASGS provides a more comprehensive, flexible and consistent way of defining Australia's statistical geography than the ASGC. For further information about the transition from ASGC to the ASGS please refer to the ABS Geography products and the ASGC (final edition).
The full classification can be downloaded from the ABS website: ASGC (final edition).
