What is the Neighbourhood Centres initiative?
Neighbourhood Centres (NCs) are critical social infrastructure that provide community services, create spaces for connection, and foster a sense of belonging. They support people and link them to services where needed. They identify strengths and priorities in communities and work to build community capacity. The term NC refers collectively to centres operating throughout the state as part of the Queensland Government NC initiative.

What is the purpose of evaluating the NCs?
In 2024, the Queensland Government commissioned the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office (QGSO) to conduct an independent evaluation of NCs. The evaluation was part of the commitment of the funding uplift provided in the 2022-23 Queensland Government Budget.
The objectives of the evaluation are to describe the role of the centres (including Community Connect Workers), the financial and non-financial support they receive, and their effectiveness in delivering intended outcomes, and to inform decision making about how best to support NCs in future.
The evaluation is not about compliance or monitoring individual NC performance.
How will the evaluation work?
The evaluation will take place between 2024 and 2027. It will collect and analyse evidence from NC operators and participants, community members and other stakeholders. It will use surveys, interviews, case studies, and analyse administrative data. This is an opportunity to learn about NCs and the services delivered within communities.
QGSO will collect information under the Statistical Returns Act 1896. It does not allow the unauthorised release of information that identifies an individual or organisation. This includes performance reporting and financial records.
How can you be involved?
Involving stakeholders such as NC operators, staff, users, partners and associated service providers is key to the success of this evaluation. QGSO may reach out via surveys, interviews, focus groups, or community meetings.
